If you've ever felt angst when joining a lamp and shade....
then do we have a post for you!
May we please Harp at you for a bit?
Lamp Harps are a decorating staple in our home.
We mix and match shades and lamps so often, there is always a need.

Oh, to be a fly on our wall, harp, harp, harp, too tall, too short......
when we are trying to decide on the perfect sized Harp!

Notice the undies in the mirror of the matching lamp?
This lamp reflects the perfect size Harp for the lamp and shade.
"Undies" you ask? Yep, that's what these are so let's keep 'em covered.
No hoochey mama lamps in our home!
This little shade is definitely too high for the lamp.
This lamp is a recent treasure from the junk store.
A quick Harp switch, and the lamp is warm and cozy.
It's a much better look and feel using a shorter Harp.
This combo doesn't look too bad, but it's not great.
There's a squabble going on between the shade and lamp.

So nice that you have all those harps on hand. Amazing how the different sizes can make such a difference. Love the first two lamps on the table!
ReplyDeleteI don't even know what a harp is...I need to take harp lessons!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advice...I am sure mine are a little off and I need more harp sizes....I just need my lamps to survive boys!!!!!!!! even the adult sons!
ReplyDeleteOh, no, I think my undies are showing on my bedroom lamps. I will look into some new harps :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Gail
P.S. -- I just loved this post :)
Got a hoochie sittin right behind me on the bookcase,, for shame for shame.. gotta get right to work on that after dinner.
ReplyDeleteYou have definately educated me with this one, now I think I am going to check all my lamps to see who has undies showing :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I have changed a harp or two in my lifetime!
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh when I read your post title! I just today, finally, found the harps for my lamps from our move! I only really wanted one particular one; the rest have become extra lamps. I love your examples of "no-no's" and what to do. Pictures speak a thousand words!
ReplyDeleteWe have harps galore!! The dining room lamps have a problem with undies.
ReplyDeleteI saw a gadget at Bed Bath and Beyond. It has the clamp device that fits over a lightbulb. It also has a little gadget at the top with a finial for shades. I am going to pick up a couple of those. hmmm...I wonder if I might be harp obsessed.:-)
Yes, I am obsessed with lamps too. Cute lamps you have here and glad you tucked away the undies!
ReplyDeletegreat information for the "faint at harp".
ReplyDeletejudi ;)
If I were as obsessive, I might have better looking lamps around here! Great post, and I loved all the advice. You can harp at me any time.
ReplyDeleteMarla, I think this post is full of good info about finding the right balance between shades and lamps, especially when trying to dress a thrift store lamp.
ReplyDeleteI think you should go ahead and share it at my party :)
xoxo Bunny Jean
Wednesday's Bunny Hop Party!
I guess I am not that obsessive because I had to look really hard for the difference, lol, but thanks for this good info...Christine
ReplyDeleteI didn't know I needed a tutorial on lamps until I read this! I've always had a hard time making lamps and shades work but didn't know what there was about them that bothered me, or what the "rules" for lamps were. Now I know. Thank you!! This was very helpful.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I need to go to Michael's Crafts today and for some reason whenever I head that way, I think of you! lol
p.s., if there's such a thing as a home lamp makeover, I need one. My lamps are such a mish-mash of styles and colors and I'm wanting them to have more continuity. Not necessarily all matching but at least complimentary to each other and the overall style of my home. Not a cheap venture, but perhaps something I can work on with replacing one at a time.
ReplyDeleteAnd here I thought if the shade was all wrong I need to change it. But you have "harped" at me so now I know - - - don't change the shade just the harp!
ReplyDeleteI will make sure I don't have any "hoochey mama lamps" in my home.
(cute and funny post!)
All beautiful harps and lamps Marla. I adore the first set on your table. So pretty. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, so THAT's how you tell! I better go check my lamps. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWhat is wrong with you people?
ReplyDeleteI've never given this much thought to be honest with you! Thanks though for a really great lesson...I'm going to pin it as such. Have a fun week.
ReplyDeleteMarla, I can't tell you how many times I have had to switch harps on lamps because I got the wrong size! I think I have the hang of it now...but it took years or trial and error!
ReplyDeleteNice post..thank you for sharing...i love it...God bless you
ReplyDeleteOnce again, I have realized my severe lack in home decor. A lamp harp?
ReplyDeleteHey, but now I know. So thank you, thank you.
Okay...I am learning more and more! This is a fun and very informative post. I also can't pass a lamp without thinking of you...which is always with wonderful warm thoughts.
ReplyDeleteHope you are doing well...you have been in my prayers and I pray the best of Christmas season to you and yours!
Great post! Thanks for sharing this very informative info. Merry Christmas...
ReplyDeleteJust stopping by to say that I think of you so often when I come to blog land. I have prayed for you, too, that you recover completely.
ReplyDeleteI wanted you to know that...
And to say Happy New Year. I'm believing that this next year will be better than the last one.
